.. and switch makerfabs tft7 over to it as a test.
We have our existing way of "reserving" PSRAM for esp-idf (we actually
control it all but add back the "reserved" part). However, this does
not work with off the shelf esp_lcd, which only will allocate a
framebuffer in PSRAM if CONFIG_SPIRAM_USE_CAPS_ALLOC (or CONFIG_SPIRAM_USE_ALLOC)
is defined, not if CONFIG_SPIRAM_USE_MEMMAP is.
This new way is possibly compatible with more esp-idf code, but it complicates
CircuitPython's initial startup since nothing until port_heap_init is
permitted to use the CP heap or supervisor allocator. In practice this
seems to be OK today.
Right now this doesn't change the setting across all boards with PSRAM and so
it does not revert esp-idf to its prior state. Instead, what I'm thinking is
that we can do it during or just after the IDF5 update when sdkconfig files
will be getting an overhaul anyway.
In #7497 port_background_task was renamed to port_background_tick
but the actual call site wasn't changed. This meant that it was
no longer called!
Rename more functions from task to tick to make it clearer which is
which.
This 2-in-1 PR started with the goal of support the Bangle.js 2
smartwatch with *no USB*.
* Adds "secure" DFU build support with a committed private key.
* Adds 3-bit color support with one dummy bit for the JDI memory display
* Allows nrf boards to have a board_background_task() run in RUN_BACKGROUND_TASK.
This is needed because the Bangle.js 2 uses the watchdog to reset.
* Renamed port_background_task() to port_background_tick() to indicate it
runs on tick, not RUN_BACKGROUND_TASK.
* Marks serial connected when the display terminal is inited. This means
that safe mode messages show up on the display.
ACep, 7-color epaper displays also pack 3 bits in 4. So, I added that
support as well.
* Adds 3-bit ACeP color support for 7-color e-paper displays. (Not
watch related but similar due to color depth.)
* Allows a refresh sequence instead of a single int command. The 7" ACeP
display requires a data byte for refresh.
* Adds optional delay after resetting the display. The ACeP displays
need this. (Probably to load LUTs from flash.)
* Adds a cleaning phase for ACeP displays before the real refresh.
For both:
* Add dither support to Palette.
* Palette no longer converts colors when set. Instead, it caches
converted colors at each index.
* ColorConverter now caches the last converted color. It should make
conversions faster for repeated colors (not dithering.)
This allows the web workflow send code to yield briefly when
waiting for more room to send in a socket. Waiting for an "interrupt"
could wait forever because the select task only waits for read and
error. Adding wait on write is tricky because much of the time we
don't care if the sockets are ready to write. Using yield avoids
this trickiness.
.. the primary user of which will be the camera, since the framebuffers
must be allocated via esp-idf allocation function and never from the
gc heap.
A board can have a default value, and the value can also be set in the
/.env file using the key CIRCUITPY_RESERVED_PSRAM with the value being
the reserved size in bytes.

* Fixes#6221 - C3 hang on `import wifi`. Enabling the WiFi PHY was
disabling USB. Now boards that use it set CONFIG_ESP_PHY_ENABLE_USB
explicitly.
* Fixes#6655 - Allows pasting into the web serial page. Fixes reading
more than 0xf bytes at a time.
* Fixes#6653 - Fixes web socket encoding of payloads >125 bytes. Can
happen when printing a long string.
* Fixes C3 responsiveness when waiting for key to enter REPL. (It
now correctly stops sleeping.)
* Disables title bar updates when in raw REPL. Related to #6548.
* Adds version to title bar.
Some ports need an extra operation to ensure that the main task is
awoken so that a queued background task will execute during an ongoing
light sleep.
This removes the need to enable supervisor ticks while I2SOut is operating.
Closes: #3952
This changes lots of files to unify `board.h` across ports. It adds
`board_deinit` when CIRCUITPY_ALARM is set. `main.c` uses it to
deinit the board before deep sleeping (even when pretending.)
Deep sleep is now a two step process for the port. First, the
port should prepare to deep sleep based on the given alarms. It
should set alarms for both deep and pretend sleep. In particular,
the pretend versions should be set immediately so that we don't
miss an alarm as we shutdown. These alarms should also wake from
`port_idle_until_interrupt` which is used when pretending to deep
sleep.
Second, when real deep sleeping, `alarm_enter_deep_sleep` is called.
The port should set any alarms it didn't during prepare based on
data it saved internally during prepare.
ESP32-S2 sleep is a bit reorganized to locate more logic with
TimeAlarm. This will help it scale to more alarm types.
Fixes#3786
This allows calls to `allocate_memory()` while the VM is running, it will then allocate from the GC heap (unless there is a suitable hole among the supervisor allocations), and when the VM exits and the GC heap is freed, the allocation will be moved to the bottom of the former GC heap and transformed into a proper supervisor allocation. Existing movable allocations will also be moved to defragment the supervisor heap and ensure that the next VM run gets as much memory as possible for the GC heap.
By itself this breaks terminalio because it violates the assumption that supervisor_display_move_memory() still has access to an undisturbed heap to copy the tilegrid from. It will work in many cases, but if you're unlucky you will get garbled terminal contents after exiting from the vm run that created the display. This will be fixed in the following commit, which is separate to simplify review.
I have a function where it should be impossible to reach the end, so I put in a safe-mode reset at the bottom:
```
int find_unused_slot(void) {
// precondition: you already verified that a slot was available
for (int i=0; i<NUM_SLOTS; i++) {
if( slot_free(i)) {
return i;
}
}
safe_mode_reset(MICROPY_FATAL_ERROR);
}
```
However, the compiler still gave a diagnostic, because safe_mode_reset was not declared NORETURN.
So I started by teaching the compiler that reset_into_safe_mode never returned. This leads at least one level deeper due to reset_cpu needing to be a NORETURN function. Each port is a little different in this area. I also marked reset_to_bootloader as NORETURN.
Additional notes:
* stm32's reset_to_bootloader was not implemented, but now does a bare reset. Most stm32s are not fitted with uf2 bootloaders anyway.
* ditto cxd56
* esp32s2 did not implement reset_cpu at all. I used esp_restart(). (not tested)
* litex did not implement reset_cpu at all. I used reboot_ctrl_write. But notably this is what reset_to_bootloader already did, so one or the other must be incorrect (not tested). reboot_ctrl_write cannot be declared NORETURN, as it returns unless the special value 0xac is written), so a new unreachable forever-loop is added.
* cxd56's reset is via a boardctl() call which can't generically be declared NORETURN, so a new unreacahble "for(;;)" forever-loop is added.
* In several places, NVIC_SystemReset is redeclared with NORETURN applied. This is accepted just fine by gcc. I chose this as preferable to editing the multiple copies of CMSIS headers where it is normally declared.
* the stub safe_mode reset simply aborts. This is used in mpy-cross.
Introduces a way to place CircuitPython code and data into
tightly coupled memory (TCM) which is accessible by the CPU in a
single cycle. It also frees up room in the corresponding cache for
intermittent data. Loading from external flash is slow!
The data cache is also now enabled.
Adds support for the iMX RT 1021 chip. Adds three new boards:
* iMX RT 1020 EVK
* iMX RT 1060 EVK
* Teensy 4.0
Related to #2492, #2472 and #2477. Fixes#2475.
This creates a common safe mode mechanic that ports can share.
As a result, the nRF52 now has safe mode support as well.
The common safe mode adds a 700ms delay at startup where a reset
during that window will cause a reset into safe mode. This window
is designated by a yellow status pixel and flashing the single led
three times.
A couple NeoPixel fixes are included for the nRF52 as well.
Fixes#1034. Fixes#990. Fixes#615.
This started while adding USB MIDI support (and descriptor support is
in this change.) When seeing that I'd have to implement the MIDI class
logic twice, once for atmel-samd and once for nrf, I decided to refactor
the USB stack so its shared across ports. This has led to a number of
changes that remove items from the ports folder and move them into
supervisor.
Furthermore, we had external SPI flash support for nrf pending so I
factored out the connection between the usb stack and the flash API as
well. This PR also includes the QSPI support for nRF.
* atmel-samd: Support patching after updating ASF4.
This makes it possible to automatically fix newer code.
* atmel-samd: Update ASF4 to include flash APIs for SAMD51.
This is the first automatic update that has caused a few deletions
where code was previously copied instead of moved.
This is a prerequisite for #260.
* atmel-samd: Remove ASF3. This will break builds.
* atmel-samd: Add ASF4 for the SAMD21 and SAMD51.
* Introduce the supervisor concept to facilitate porting.
The supervisor is the code which runs individual MicroPython VMs. By
splitting it out we make it more consistent and easier to find.
This also adds very basic SAMD21 and SAMD51 support using the
supervisor. Only the REPL currently works.
This begins the work for #178.
