David Lechner ab317a0d66 py/misc: Remove use of bitfield from vstr_t.
Since there is only one flag, we don't need to use a bitfield in vstr_t.
Compilers emit extra instructions to access a bitfield, so this should
reduce the binary size a small amount.

Dan Ellis 6f4d424f46 py/formatfloat: Use pow(10, e) instead of pos/neg_pow lookup tables.
Rework the conversion of floats to decimal strings so it aligns precisely
with the conversion of strings to floats in parsenum.c. This is to avoid
rendering 1eX as 9.99999eX-1 etc. This is achieved by removing the power-
of-10 tables and using pow() to compute the exponent directly, and that's
done efficiently by first estimating the power-of-10 exponent from the
power-of-2 exponent in the floating-point representation.

Code size is reduced by roughly 100 to 200 bytes by this commit.

Jeff Epler 8d8f83bc05 Merge tag 'v1.17' into merge-1.17
F-strings, new machine.I2S class, ESP32-C3 support and LEGO_HUB_NO6 board

This release of MicroPython adds support for f-strings (PEP-498), with a
few limitations compared to normal Python. F-strings are essentially
syntactic sugar for "".format() and make formatting strings a lot more
convenient. Other improvements to the core runtime include pretty printing
OSError when it has two arguments (an errno code and a string), scheduling
of KeyboardInterrupt on the main thread, and support for a single argument
to the optimised form of StopIteration.

In the machine module a new I2S class has been added, with support for
esp32 and stm32 ports. This provides a consistent API for transmit and
receive of audio data in blocking, non-blocking and asyncio-based
operation. Also, the json module has support for the "separators" argument
in the dump and dumps functions, and framebuf now includes a way to blit
between frame buffers of different formats using a palette. A new,
portable machine.bitstream function is also added which can output a stream
of bits with configurable timing, and is used as the basis for driving
WS2812 LEDs in a common way across ports.

There has been some restructuring of the repository directory layout, with
all third-party code now in the lib/ directory. And a new top-level
directory shared/ has been added with first-party code that was previously
in lib/ moved there.

The docs have seen further improvement with enhancements and additions to
the rp2 parts, as well as a new quick reference for the zephyr port.
The terms master/slave have been replaced with controller/peripheral,
mainly relating to I2C and SPI usage. And u-module references have been
replaced with just the module name without the u-prefix to help clear up
the intended usage of modules in MicroPython.

For the esp8266 and esp32 ports, hidden networks are now included in WLAN
scan results. On the esp32 the RMT class is enhanced with idle_level and
write_pulses modes. There is initial support for ESP32-C3 chips with
GENERIC_C3 and GENERIC_C3_USB boards.

The javascript port has had its Makefile and garbage collector
implementation reworked so it compiles and runs with latest the Emscripten
using asyncify.

The mimxrt port sees the addition of hardware I2C and SPI support, as well
as some additional methods to the machine module. There is also support
for Hyperflash chips.

The nrf port now has full VFS storage support, enables source-line on
traceback, and has .mpy features consistent with other ports.

For the rp2 port there is now more configurability for boards, and more
boards added.

The stm32 port has a new LEGO_HUB_NO6 board definition with detailed
information how to get this LEGO Hub running stock MicroPython. There is
also now support to change the CPU frequency on STM32WB MCUs. And USBD_xxx
descriptor options have been renamed to MICROPY_HW_USB_xxx.

A few minor fixes for corner cases
* Always clear the peripheral interrupt so we don't hang when full
* Store the ringbuf in the object so it gets collected when we're alive
* Make UART objects have a finaliser so they are deinit when their
  memory is freed
* Copy bytes into the ringbuf from the FIFO after we read to ensure
  the interrupt is enabled ASAP
* Copy bytes into the ringbuf from the FIFO before measuring our
rx available because the interrupt is based on a threshold (not
  > 0). For example, a single byte won't trigger an interrupt.

Damien George 2725a79192 py: Always give noop defines when MICROPY_ROM_TEXT_COMPRESSION disabled.
This commit provides a typedef for mp_rom_error_text_t, and a macro define
for MP_COMPRESSED_ROM_TEXT, when MICROPY_ROM_TEXT_COMPRESSION is disabled.
This simplifies the configuration (it no longer has a special case for
MICROPY_ENABLE_DYNRUNTIME) and makes it work for other cases that don't use
compression (eg examples/embedding). This commit also ensures
MICROPY_ROM_TEXT_COMPRESSION is defined during qstr processing.

Jim Mussared 154b4eb354 py: Implement "common word" compression scheme for error messages.
The idea here is that there's a moderate amount of ROM used up by exception
text. Obviously we try to keep the messages short, and the code can enable
terse errors, but it still adds up. Listed below is the total string data
size for various ports:

    bare-arm 2860
    minimal 2876
    stm32 8926 (PYBV11)
    cc3200 3751
    esp32 5721

This commit implements compression of these strings. It takes advantage of
the fact that these strings are all 7-bit ascii and extracts the top 128
frequently used words from the messages and stores them packed (dropping
their null-terminator), then uses (0x80 | index) inside strings to refer to
these common words. Spaces are automatically added around words, saving
more bytes. This happens transparently in the build process, mirroring the
steps that are used to generate the QSTR data. The MP_COMPRESSED_ROM_TEXT
macro wraps any literal string that should compressed, and it's
automatically decompressed in mp_decompress_rom_string.

There are many schemes that could be used for the compression, and some are
included in py/makecompresseddata.py for reference (space, Huffman, ngram,
common word). Results showed that the common-word compression gets better
results. This is before counting the increased cost of the Huffman
decoder. This might be slightly counter-intuitive, but this data is
extremely repetitive at a word-level, and the byte-level entropy coder
can't quite exploit that as efficiently. Ideally one would combine both
approaches, but for now the common-word approach is the one that is used.

For additional comparison, the size of the raw data compressed with gzip
and zlib is calculated, as a sort of proxy for a lower entropy bound. With
this scheme we come within 15% on stm32, and 30% on bare-arm (i.e. we use
x% more bytes than the data compressed with gzip -- not counting the code
overhead of a decoder, and how this would be hypothetically implemented).

The feature is disabled by default and can be enabled by setting
MICROPY_ROM_TEXT_COMPRESSION at the Makefile-level.

Damien George 19aee9438a py/unicode: Clean up utf8 funcs and provide non-utf8 inline versions.
This patch provides inline versions of the utf8 helper functions for the
case when unicode is disabled (MICROPY_PY_BUILTINS_STR_UNICODE set to 0).
This saves code size.

The unichar_charlen function is also renamed to utf8_charlen to match the
other utf8 helper functions, and the signature of this function is adjusted
for consistency (const char* -> const byte*, mp_uint_t -> size_t).

Scott Shawcroft 416abe33ed Introduce a long lived section of the heap.
This adapts the allocation process to start from either end of the heap
when searching for free space. The default behavior is identical to the
existing behavior where it starts with the lowest block and looks higher.
Now it can also look from the highest block and lower depending on the
long_lived parameter to gc_alloc. As the heap fills, the two sections may
overlap. When they overlap, a collect may be triggered in order to keep
the long lived section compact. However, free space is always eligable
for each type of allocation.

By starting from either of the end of the heap we have ability to separate
short lived objects from long lived ones. This separation reduces heap
fragmentation because long lived objects are easy to densely pack.

Most objects are short lived initially but may be made long lived when
they are referenced by a type or module. This involves copying the
memory and then letting the collect phase free the old portion.

QSTR pools and chunks are always long lived because they are never freed.

The reallocation, collection and free processes are largely unchanged. They
simply also maintain an index to the highest free block as well as the lowest.
These indices are used to speed up the allocation search until the next collect.

In practice, this change may slightly slow down import statements with the
benefit that memory is much less fragmented afterwards. For example, a test
import into a 20k heap that leaves ~6k free previously had the largest
continuous free space of ~400 bytes. After this change, the largest continuous
free space is over 3400 bytes.

Alexander Steffen 299bc62586 all: Unify header guard usage.
The code conventions suggest using header guards, but do not define how
those should look like and instead point to existing files. However, not
all existing files follow the same scheme, sometimes omitting header guards
altogether, sometimes using non-standard names, making it easy to
accidentally pick a "wrong" example.

This commit ensures that all header files of the MicroPython project (that
were not simply copied from somewhere else) follow the same pattern, that
was already present in the majority of files, especially in the py folder.

The rules are as follows.

Naming convention:
* start with the words MICROPY_INCLUDED
* contain the full path to the file
* replace special characters with _

In addition, there are no empty lines before #ifndef, between #ifndef and
one empty line before #endif. #endif is followed by a comment containing
the name of the guard macro.

py/grammar.h cannot use header guards by design, since it has to be
included multiple times in a single C file. Several other files also do not
need header guards as they are only used internally and guaranteed to be
included only once:
* MICROPY_MPHALPORT_H
* mpconfigboard.h
* mpconfigport.h
* mpthreadport.h
* pin_defs_*.h
* qstrdefs*.h
