add esp32-camera
This uses the esp32-camera code instead of our own homebrewed camera code.
In theory it supports esp32, esp32-s2 and esp32-s3, as long as they have
PSRAM.

This is very basic and doesn't support changing any camera parameters,
including switching resolution or pixelformat.

This is tested on the Kaluga (ESP32-S2) and ESP32-S3-Eye boards.

First, reserve some PSRAM by putting this line in `CIRCUITPY/_env`:
```
CIRCUITPY_RESERVED_PSRAM=524288
```
and hard-reset the board for it to take effect.

Now, the following script will take a very low-resolution jpeg file and print
it in the REPL in escape coded form:

```python
import board
import esp32_camera
c = esp32_camera.Camera(
    data_pins=board.CAMERA_DATA,
    external_clock_pin=board.CAMERA_XCLK,
    pixel_clock_pin=board.CAMERA_PCLK,
    vsync_pin=board.CAMERA_VSYNC,
    href_pin=board.CAMERA_HREF,
    pixel_format=esp32_camera.PixelFormat.JPEG,
    i2c=board.I2C(),
    external_clock_frequency=20_000_000)
m = c.take()
if m is not None:
    print(bytes(m))
```

Then on desktop open a python repl and run something like
```python
>>> with open("my.jpg", "wb") as f: f.write(<BIG PASTE FROM REPL>)
```
and open my.jpg in a viewer.

82be75adb5 Add ability to reserve psram
.. the primary user of which will be the camera, since the framebuffers
must be allocated via esp-idf allocation function and never from the
gc heap.

A board can have a default value, and the value can also be set in the
/.env file using the key CIRCUITPY_RESERVED_PSRAM with the value being
the reserved size in bytes.

modbuiltins: Catch most exceptions during dir()
This helps with Python-compatibility (see issue #4171) but doesn't
completely resolve it.

Now, `dir()` still computes any properties of the underlying object,
HOWEVER, if the property raises an exception this expression is
captured.

This ability to capture exceptions always existed in
`mp_load_method_protected`, we just need to turn it on via the
`catch_all_exc` boolean parameter.

09091ecb83 Enable collections deque for CIRCUITPY_FULL_BUILD
I'd like to use `collections.deque`:

https://docs.circuitpython.org/en/latest/docs/library/collections.html#collections.deque

...on my RP2040-based Keybow 2040 (https://circuitpython.org/board/pimoroni_keybow2040/).

For MicroPython, `collections.deque` is enabled for all `rp2` devices,
because they all have `MICROPY_CONFIG_ROM_LEVEL` set to 'extra features':

cf7d962cf3/ports/rp2/mpconfigport.h (L44)

...which includes `MICROPY_PY_COLLECTIONS_DEQUE` (see
6bda80d811/py/mpconfig.h (L1225-L1227) ).

For CircuitPython, it looks like `MICROPY_CONFIG_ROM_LEVEL` defaults to
'core' (`MICROPY_CONFIG_ROM_LEVEL_CORE_FEATURES`) and isn't updated
against any of the ports, so the only port getting `collections.deque`
is the `unix` port, which explcitly sets `MICROPY_PY_COLLECTIONS_DEQUE`:

6925a00138/ports/unix/mpconfigport.h (L134)

At Dan Halbert's suggestion...

https://github.com/adafruit/circuitpython/pull/6474#issuecomment-1152364768

... this commit enables `MICROPY_PY_COLLECTIONS_DEQUE` for all builds where
`CIRCUITPY_FULL_BUILD` is true - which includes Raspberry Pi:

6925a00138/ports/raspberrypi/mpconfigport.mk (L11)

Wi-Fi autoconnect and title bar status
This adds support for CIRCUITPY_WIFI_SSID and CIRCUITPY_WIFI_PASSWORD
in `/.env`. When both are defined, CircuitPython will attempt to
connect to the network even when user code isn't running. If the
user code attempts to a network with the same SSID, it will return
immediately. Connecting to another SSID will disconnect from the
auto-connected network. If the user code initiates the connection,
then it will be shutdown after user code exits. (Should match <8
behavior.)

This PR also reworks the default displayio terminal. It now supports
a title bar TileGrid in addition to the (newly renamed) scroll area.
The default title bar is the top row of the display and is positioned
to the right of the Blinka logo when it is enabled. The scroll area
is now below the Blinka logo.

The Wi-Fi auto-connect code now uses the title bar to show its
state including the IP address when connected. It does this through
the "standard" OSC control sequence `ESC ] 0 ; <s> ESC \` where <s>
is the title bar string. This is commonly supported by terminals
so it should work over USB and UART as well.

Only check the savings if a word occurs at least twice
Profiling shows that `est_net_savings` is one of the highest costs of
the whole process. Approximately, you can save storage only if a word
appears more than once, and doing this greatly reduces the number
of `est_net_savings` calls. Locally, it reduces the time for this
specific build step by 50% on ports/unix coverage build, without
affecting the size of the generated binary.

Switch translate() to the header file
This allows the compile stage to optimize most of the translate()
function away and saves a ton of space (~40k on ESP). *However*, it
requires us to wait for the qstr output before we compile the rest
of our .o files. (Only qstr.o used to wait.)

This isn't as good as the current setup with LTO though. Trinket M0
loses <1k with this setup.

So, we should probably conditionalize this along with LTO.

Enable squeezing property storage in flash
.. and enable it on atmel-samd and raspberrypi. On trinket_m0 this saves
96 net bytes of flash. There are 216 bytes actually saved by reducing
the flash storage size of the property descriptors, but added code in
several paths takes back over half of the 'raw savings'.

By organizing the "get-only" and "get-set" (but no delete) properties
each in a different section, we can represent then more efficiently.

Testing performed: that a get-only property can still be gotten but
can't be set or deleted; that a get-set property can sill be gotten or
set but can't be deleted. Tested on pygamer.

Because this requires linker file support, I only enabled it on two of
the ports.

genlast: Actually catch errors when preprocessing files
Due to a number of problems, an error calling the preprocessor wasn't
making the whole genlast process fail.

Now, after an execption during preprocess is printed, it is re-raised.
Then, by actually collating the results of executor.map, the exception
will be raised in the main thread context. Any CalledProcessError is simply
converted to a nonzero exit status.

Boosted performance, board.json metadata, more mimxrt, rp2, samd features

This release of MicroPython sees a boost to the overall performance of the
VM and runtime. This is achieved by the addition of an optional cache to
speed up general hash table lookups, as well as a fast path in the VM for
the LOAD_ATTR opcode on instance types. The new configuration options are
MICROPY_OPT_MAP_LOOKUP_CACHE and MICROPY_OPT_LOAD_ATTR_FAST_PATH.  As part
of this improvement the MICROPY_OPT_CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE option has
been removed, which provided a similar map caching mechanism but with the
cache stored in the bytecode, which made it not useful on bare metal ports.
The new mechanism is measured to be at least as good as the old one,
applies to more map lookups, has a constant RAM overhead, and applies to
native code as well as bytecode.

These performance options are enabled on the esp32, mimxrt, rp2, stm32 and
unix ports. For esp32 and mimxrt some code is also moved to RAM to further
boost performance. On stm32, performance increases by about 20% for
benchmarks that are heavy on name lookups, like misc_pystone.py and
misc_raytrace.py. On esp32 performance can increase by 2-3x, and on mimxrt
it is up to 6x.

All boards in all ports now have a board.json metadata file, which is used
to automatically build firmware and generate a webpage for that board
(among other possibilities). Auto-build scripts have been added for this
purpose and they build all esp32, mimxrt, rp2, samd and stm32 boards. The
generated output is available at https://micropython.org/download.

Support for FROZEN_DIR and FROZEN_MPY_DIR has been deprecated for some time
and was finally removed in this release. Instead of these, FROZEN_MANIFEST
can be used. The io.resource_stream() function is also removed, replaced
by the pure Python version in micropython-lib.

The search order for importing frozen Python modules is now controlled by
the ".frozen" entry in sys.path. This string is added by default in the
second position in sys.path. User code should adjust sys.path depending on
the desired behaviour. Putting ".frozen" first in sys.path will speed up
importing frozen modules.

A bug in multiple precision integers with bitwise of -0 was fixed in commit
2c139bbf4e.

The platform module has been added to allow querying the compiler and
underlying SDK/HAL/libc version. This is enabled on esp32, mimxrt and
stm32 ports.

The mpremote tool now supports seek, flush, mkdir and rmdir on PC-mounted
filesystems. And a help command has been added.

The documentation has seen many additions and improvements thanks (for a
second time) to the Google Season of Docs project. The rp2 documentation
now includes a reference for PIO assembly instructions, a PIO quick
reference and a PIO tutorial. The random and stm modules have been
documented, along with sys.settrace, manifest.py files and mpremote. There
is also now more detail about the differences between MicroPython and
standard Python 3.5 and above.

The esp32 port sees support for ESP32-S3 SoCs, and new boards GENERIC_S3,
ESP32_S2_WROVER, LOLIN_S2_MINI, LOLIN_S2_PICO and UM_FEATHERS2NEO.  The PWM
driver has been improved and now supports all PWM timers and channels, and
the duty_u16() and duty_ns() methods, and it keeps the duty constant when
changing frequency. The machine.bitstream() function has been improved to
use RMT, with an option to select the original bit-banging implementation.

The mimxrt port gained new hardware features: SDRAM and SD card support, as
well as network integration with a LAN driver. The machine.WDT class was
added along with the machine.reset_cause(), machine.soft_reset(),
machine.unique_id() add machine.bitstream() functions. DHT sensor support
was added, and f-strings were enabled.

The rp2 port now has support for networking, and bluetooth using NimBLE.
The Nina-W10 WiFi/BT driver is fully integrated and supported by the new
Arduino Nano RP2040 connect board. I2S protocol support is added along
with a machine.bitstream() driver and DHT sensor support. The PWM driver
had a bug fix with the accuracy of setting/getting the frequency, and the
duty value is now retained when changing the frequency.

On the samd port there is now support for the internal flash being a block
device, and for filesystems and the os module. Pin and LED classes have
been implemented. There are more time functions, more Python features
enabled, and the help() function is added. SEEED_WIO_TERMINAL and
SEEED_XIAO board definitions are now available.

The stm32 port now has support for F427, F479 and H7A3(Q)/H7B3(Q) MCUs, and
new board definitions for VCC_GND_H743VI, OLIMEX_H407, MIKROE_QUAIL,
GARATRONIC_PYBSTICK26_F411, STM32H73B3I_DK. A bug was fixed in the SPI
driver where a SPI transfer could fail if the CYW43 WiFi driver was also
active at the same time.

On the windows port the help() function has been enabled, and support for
build variants added, to match the unix port.

The zephyr port upgraded Zephyr to v2.7.0.

The change in code size since the previous release for various ports is
(absolute and percentage change in the text section):

       bare-arm:  -1520  -2.605%
    minimal x86:  -2256  -1.531%
       unix x64:   -457  -0.089%
    unix nanbox:   -925  -0.204%
          stm32:   +312  +0.079% PYBV10
         cc3200:   -176  -0.096%
        esp8266:   +532  +0.076% GENERIC
          esp32: +27096  +1.820% GENERIC
            nrf:   -212  -0.121% pca10040
            rp2:  +9904  +2.051% PICO
           samd: +35332 +33.969% ADAFRUIT_ITSYBITSY_M4_EXPRESS

The changes that dominate these numbers are:
- bare-arm, minimal: use of new MICROPY_CONFIG_ROM_LEVEL_MINIMUM option and
  subsequent disabling of remaining optional features
- unix, cc3200, nrf: general code size reductions of the core
- stm32: performance improvements, addition of platform module
- esp8266: enabling f-strings
- esp32: use of -O2 instead of -Os
- rp2: machine.I2S and other new hardware features
- samd: filesystem support and other new hardware features

aac5a97d08 ports: Move '.frozen' to second entry in sys.path.
In commit 86ce442607 the '.frozen' entry was
added at the start of sys.path, to allow control over when frozen modules
are searched during import, and retain existing behaviour whereby frozen
was searched before the filesystem.

But Python semantics of sys.path require sys.path[0] to be the directory of
the currently executing script, or ''.

This commit moves the '.frozen' entry to second place in sys.path, so
sys.path[0] retains its correct value (described above).

This commit makes sure that the value zero is always encoded in an mpz_t as

This invariant is needed for some of the bitwise operations that operate on

Initial broadcom port for Raspberry Pi
This targets the 64-bit CPU Raspberry Pis. The BCM2711 on the Pi 4
and the BCM2837 on the Pi 3 and Zero 2W. There are 64-bit fixes
outside of the ports directory for it.

There are a couple other cleanups that were incidental:
* Use const mcu_pin_obj_t instead of omitting the const. The structs
  themselves are const because they are in ROM.
* Use PTR <-> OBJ conversions in more places. They were found when
  mp_obj_t was set to an integer type rather than pointer.
* Optimize submodule checkout because the Pi submodules are heavy
  and unnecessary for the vast majority of builds.

Make it possible to proceed to a regular lookup in locals_dict if the

completely replace the lookup in locals_dict.

This is useful for custom builtin classes that have mostly regular methods

to deal with the special cases only and the default lookup will be used for
generic methods.

a8614a61dc ParallelImageCapture: Add continuous capture on espressif
By having a pair of buffers, the capture hardware can fill one buffer while
Python code (including displayio, etc) operates on the other buffer. This
increases the responsiveness of camera-using code.

On the Kaluga it makes the following improvements:
 * 320x240 viewfinder at 30fps instead of 15fps using directio
 * 240x240 animated gif capture at 10fps instead of 7.5fps

As discussed at length on Discord, the "usual end user" code will look like
this:

    camera = ...

    with camera.continuous_capture(buffer1, buffer2) as capture:
        for frame in capture:
            # Do something with frame

However, rather than presenting a context manager, the core code consists of
three new functions to start & stop continuous capture, and to get the next
frame. The reason is twofold. First, it's simply easier to implement the
context manager object in pure Python. Second, for more advanced usage, the
context manager may be too limiting, and it's easier to iterate on the right
design in Python code. In particular, I noticed that adapting the
JPEG-capturing programs to use continuous capture mode needed a change in
program structure.

The camera app was structured as
```python
while True:
    if shutter button was just pressed:
        capture a jpeg frame
    else:
        update the viewfinder
```

However, "capture a jpeg frame" needs to (A) switch the camera settings and (B)
capture into a different, larger buffer then (C) return to the earlier
settings. This can't be done during continuous capture mode. So just
restructuring it as follows isn't going to work:

```python
with camera.continuous_capture(buffer1, buffer2) as capture:
    for frame in capture:
        if shutter button was just pressed:
            capture a jpeg frame, without disturbing continuous capture mode
        else:
            update the viewfinder
```

The continuous mode is only implemented in the espressif port; others
will throw an exception if the associated methods are invoked. It's not
impossible to implement there, just not a priority, since these micros don't
have enough RAM for two framebuffer copies at any resonable sizes.

The capture code, including single-shot capture, now take mp_obj_t in the
common-hal layer, instead of a buffer & length. This was done for the
continuous capture mode because it has to identify & return to the user the
proper Python object representing the original buffer. In the Espressif port,
it was convenient to implement single capture in terms of a multi-capture,
which is why I changed the singleshot routine's signature too.

694af3dd23 main: redesign boot_out.txt writing
New design:
 * capture output to a vstr
 * compare the complete vstr to boot_out.txt
 * rewrite if not a complete match

This is resilient against future changes to the automatic
text written to boot_out.txt.

This also fixes rewriting boot_out.txt in the case where
boot.py prints something.

Perhaps it also saves a bit of code space. Some tricks:
 * no need to close a file in read mode
 * no need to switch on/off USB write access, going down to the
   oofatfs layer doesn't check it anyway

74457d81f2 str_modulo_format: Make error better match standard python
Before this, "%c" % 3.14 would raise the error `integer required`
even though python3 uses `%c requires int or char`, just like both
already did for "%c" % "ab".

This gets rid of a string to translate, and makes behavior match
python3 better.

F-strings, new machine.I2S class, ESP32-C3 support and LEGO_HUB_NO6 board

This release of MicroPython adds support for f-strings (PEP-498), with a
few limitations compared to normal Python. F-strings are essentially
syntactic sugar for "".format() and make formatting strings a lot more
convenient. Other improvements to the core runtime include pretty printing
OSError when it has two arguments (an errno code and a string), scheduling
of KeyboardInterrupt on the main thread, and support for a single argument
to the optimised form of StopIteration.

In the machine module a new I2S class has been added, with support for
esp32 and stm32 ports. This provides a consistent API for transmit and
receive of audio data in blocking, non-blocking and asyncio-based
operation. Also, the json module has support for the "separators" argument
in the dump and dumps functions, and framebuf now includes a way to blit
between frame buffers of different formats using a palette. A new,
portable machine.bitstream function is also added which can output a stream
of bits with configurable timing, and is used as the basis for driving
WS2812 LEDs in a common way across ports.

There has been some restructuring of the repository directory layout, with
all third-party code now in the lib/ directory. And a new top-level
directory shared/ has been added with first-party code that was previously
in lib/ moved there.

The docs have seen further improvement with enhancements and additions to
the rp2 parts, as well as a new quick reference for the zephyr port.
The terms master/slave have been replaced with controller/peripheral,
mainly relating to I2C and SPI usage. And u-module references have been
replaced with just the module name without the u-prefix to help clear up
the intended usage of modules in MicroPython.

For the esp8266 and esp32 ports, hidden networks are now included in WLAN
scan results. On the esp32 the RMT class is enhanced with idle_level and
write_pulses modes. There is initial support for ESP32-C3 chips with
GENERIC_C3 and GENERIC_C3_USB boards.

The javascript port has had its Makefile and garbage collector
implementation reworked so it compiles and runs with latest the Emscripten
using asyncify.

The mimxrt port sees the addition of hardware I2C and SPI support, as well
as some additional methods to the machine module. There is also support
for Hyperflash chips.

The nrf port now has full VFS storage support, enables source-line on
traceback, and has .mpy features consistent with other ports.

For the rp2 port there is now more configurability for boards, and more
boards added.

The stm32 port has a new LEGO_HUB_NO6 board definition with detailed
information how to get this LEGO Hub running stock MicroPython. There is
also now support to change the CPU frequency on STM32WB MCUs. And USBD_xxx
descriptor options have been renamed to MICROPY_HW_USB_xxx.

b326edf68c all: Remove MICROPY_OPT_CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE.
This commit removes all parts of code associated with the existing
MICROPY_OPT_CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE optimisation option, including the
-mcache-lookup-bc option to mpy-cross.

This feature originally provided a significant performance boost for Unix,
but wasn't able to be enabled for MCU targets (due to frozen bytecode), and
added significant extra complexity to generating and distributing .mpy
files.

The equivalent performance gain is now provided by the combination of
MICROPY_OPT_LOAD_ATTR_FAST_PATH and MICROPY_OPT_MAP_LOOKUP_CACHE (which has
been enabled on the unix port in the previous commit).

It's hard to provide precise performance numbers, but tests have been run
on a wide variety of architectures (x86-64, ARM Cortex, Aarch64, RISC-V,
xtensa) and they all generally agree on the qualitative improvements seen
by the combination of MICROPY_OPT_LOAD_ATTR_FAST_PATH and
MICROPY_OPT_MAP_LOOKUP_CACHE.

For example, on a "quiet" Linux x64 environment (i3-5010U @ 2.10GHz) the
change from CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE, to LOAD_ATTR_FAST_PATH combined
with MAP_LOOKUP_CACHE is:

This shows that the new optimisations are at least as good as the existing
inline-bytecode-caching, and are sometimes much better (because the new
ones apply caching to a wider variety of map lookups).

The new optimisations can also benefit code generated by the native

In summary, compared to MICROPY_OPT_CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE, the new
MICROPY_OPT_LOAD_ATTR_FAST_PATH and MICROPY_OPT_MAP_LOOKUP_CACHE options:
- are simpler;
- take less code size;
- are faster (generally);
- work with code generated by the native emitter;
- can be used on embedded targets with a small and constant RAM overhead;
- allow the same .mpy bytecode to run on all targets.

See #7680 for further discussion. And see also #7653 for a discussion
about simplifying mpy-cross options.

11ef8f22fe py/map: Add an optional cache of (map+index) to speed up map lookups.
The existing inline bytecode caching optimisation, selected by
MICROPY_OPT_CACHE_MAP_LOOKUP_IN_BYTECODE, reserves an extra byte in the
bytecode after certain opcodes, which at runtime stores a map index of the
likely location of this field when looking up the qstr. This scheme is
incompatible with bytecode-in-ROM, and doesn't work with native generated
code. It also stores bytecode in .mpy files which is of a different format
to when the feature is disabled, making generation of .mpy files more
complex.

This commit provides an alternative optimisation via an approach that adds
a global cache for map offsets, then all mp_map_lookup operations use it.
It's less precise than bytecode caching, but allows the cache to be
independent and external to the bytecode that is executing. It also works
for the native emitter and adds a similar performance boost on top of the
gain already provided by the native emitter.

7b89ad8dbf py/vm: Add a fast path for LOAD_ATTR on instance types.
When the LOAD_ATTR opcode is executed there are quite a few different cases
that have to be handled, but the common case is accessing a member on an
instance type. Typically, built-in types provide methods which is why this
is common.

Fortunately, for this specific case, if the member is found in the member
map then there's no further processing.

This optimisation does a relatively cheap check (type is instance) and then
forwards directly to the member map lookup, falling back to the regular
path if necessary.

01374d941f py/mpconfig.h: Define initial templates for "feature levels".
This is the beginning of a set of changes to simplify enabling/disabling
features.  The goals are:
- Remove redundancy from mpconfigport.h (never set a value to the default
  -- make it clear exactly what's being enabled).
- Improve consistency between ports. All "similar" ports (i.e. approx same
  flash size) should get the same features.
- Simplify mpconfigport.h -- just get default/sensible options for the size
  of the port.
- Make it easy for defining constrained boards (e.g. STM32F0/L0), they can
  just set a lower level.

This commit makes a step towards this and defines the "core" level as the
current default feature set, and a "minimal" level to turn off everything.
And a few placeholder levels are added for where the other ports will
roughly land.

This is a no-op change for all ports.

e6850838cd py/parse: Simplify parse nodes representing a list.
This commit simplifies and optimises the parse tree in-memory
representation of lists of expressions, for tuples and lists, and when
tuples are used on the left-hand-side of assignments and within del
statements. This reduces memory usage of the parse tree when such code is
compiled, and also reduces the size of the compiler.

For example, (1,) was previously the following parse tree:

    expr_stmt(5) (n=2)
      atom_paren(45) (n=1)
        testlist_comp(146) (n=2)
          int(1)
          testlist_comp_3b(149) (n=1)
            NULL
      NULL

and with this commit is now:

    expr_stmt(5) (n=2)
      atom_paren(45) (n=1)
        testlist_comp(146) (n=1)
          int(1)
      NULL

Similarly, (1, 2, 3) was previously:

    expr_stmt(5) (n=2)
      atom_paren(45) (n=1)
        testlist_comp(146) (n=2)
          int(1)
          testlist_comp_3c(150) (n=2)
            int(2)
            int(3)
      NULL

and is now:

    expr_stmt(5) (n=2)
      atom_paren(45) (n=1)
        testlist_comp(146) (n=3)
          int(1)
          int(2)
          int(3)
      NULL

adding boot counter to main.c
The boot counter is a uint8_t single-byte counter stored in the first NVM byte position (`micrcontroller.nvm[0]`). The counter increments by 1 each time the board boots, regardless if it's a hard or soft reset.

Enable the boot counter by adding `#define CIRCUITPY_BOOT_COUNTER 1` to your board's mpconfigboard.h file. Note that an error will be thrown during the build if `CIRCUITPY_INTERNAL_NVM_SIZE` is not also set within mpconfigboard.h.

keep the same Python API across ports.
