Header files that are considered internal to the py core and should not
normally be included directly are:
py/nlr.h - internal nlr configuration and declarations
py/bc0.h - contains bytecode macro definitions
py/runtime0.h - contains basic runtime enums
Instead, the top-level header files to include are one of:
py/obj.h - includes runtime0.h and defines everything to use the
mp_obj_t type
py/runtime.h - includes mpstate.h and hence nlr.h, obj.h, runtime0.h,
and defines everything to use the general runtime support functions
Additional, specific headers (eg py/objlist.h) can be included if needed.
IEEE floating point is specified such that a comparison of NaN with itself
returns false, and Python respects these semantics. This patch makes uPy
also have these semantics. The fix has a minor impact on the speed of the
object-equality fast-path, but that seems to be unavoidable and it's much
more important to have correct behaviour (especially in this case where
the wrong answer for nan==nan is silently returned).
These are now returned as "operation not supported" instead of raising
TypeError. In particular, this fixes equality for float vs incompatible
types, which now properly results in False instead of exception. This
also paves the road to support reverse operation (e.g. __radd__) with
float objects.
This is achieved by introducing mp_obj_get_float_maybe(), similar to
existing mp_obj_get_int_maybe().
The unary-op/binary-op enums are already defined, and there are no
arithmetic tricks used with these types, so it makes sense to use the
correct enum type for arguments that take these values. It also reduces
code size quite a bit for nan-boxing builds.

This patch changes mp_uint_t to size_t for the len argument of the
following public facing C functions:
mp_obj_tuple_get
mp_obj_list_get
mp_obj_get_array
These functions take a pointer to the len argument (to be filled in by the
function) and callers of these functions should update their code so the
type of len is changed to size_t. For ports that don't use nan-boxing
there should be no change in generate code because the size of the type
remains the same (word sized), and in a lot of cases there won't even be a
compiler warning if the type remains as mp_uint_t.
The reason for this change is to standardise on the use of size_t for
variables that count memory (or memory related) sizes/lengths. It helps
builds that use nan-boxing.
Allows to iterate over the following without allocating on the heap:
- tuple
- list
- string, bytes
- bytearray, array
- dict (not dict.keys, dict.values, dict.items)
- set, frozenset
Allows to call the following without heap memory:
- all, any, min, max, sum
TODO: still need to allocate stack memory in bytecode for iter_buf.
Something like:
if foo == "bar":
will be always false if foo is b"bar". In CPython, warning is issued if
interpreter is started as "python3 -b". In MicroPython,
MICROPY_PY_STR_BYTES_CMP_WARN setting controls it.
Passing an mp_uint_t to a %d printf format is incorrect for builds where
mp_uint_t is larger than word size (eg a nanboxing build). This patch
adds some simple casting to int in these cases.
This allows the mp_obj_t type to be configured to something other than a
pointer-sized primitive type.
This patch also includes additional changes to allow the code to compile
when sizeof(mp_uint_t) != sizeof(void*), such as using size_t instead of
mp_uint_t, and various casts.
mp_obj_get_int_truncated will raise a TypeError if the argument is not
an integral type. Use mp_obj_int_get_truncated only when you know the
argument is a small or big int.
Hashing is now done using mp_unary_op function with MP_UNARY_OP_HASH as
the operator argument. Hashing for int, str and bytes still go via
fast-path in mp_unary_op since they are the most common objects which
need to be hashed.
This lead to quite a bit of code cleanup, and should be more efficient
if anything. It saves 176 bytes code space on Thumb2, and 360 bytes on
x86.
The only loss is that the error message "unhashable type" is now the
more generic "unsupported type for __hash__".
User instances are hashable by default (using __hash__ inherited from
"object"). But if __eq__ is defined and __hash__ not defined in particular
class, instance is not hashable.
Having NotImplemented as MP_OBJ_SENTINEL turned out to be problematic
(it needs to be checked for in a lot of places, otherwise it'll crash
as would pass MP_OBJ_IS_OBJ()), so made a proper singleton value like
Ellipsis, both of them sharing the same type.
From https://docs.python.org/3/library/constants.html#NotImplemented :
"Special value which should be returned by the binary special methods
(e.g. __eq__(), __lt__(), __add__(), __rsub__(), etc.) to indicate
that the operation is not implemented with respect to the other type;
may be returned by the in-place binary special methods (e.g. __imul__(),
__iand__(), etc.) for the same purpose. Its truth value is true."
Some people however appear to abuse it to mean "no value" when None is
a legitimate value (don't do that).
Previous to this patch the printing mechanism was a bit of a tangled
mess. This patch attempts to consolidate printing into one interface.
All (non-debug) printing now uses the mp_print* family of functions,
mainly mp_printf. All these functions take an mp_print_t structure as
their first argument, and this structure defines the printing backend
through the "print_strn" function of said structure.
Printing from the uPy core can reach the platform-defined print code via
two paths: either through mp_sys_stdout_obj (defined pert port) in
conjunction with mp_stream_write; or through the mp_plat_print structure
which uses the MP_PLAT_PRINT_STRN macro to define how string are printed
on the platform. The former is only used when MICROPY_PY_IO is defined.
With this new scheme printing is generally more efficient (less layers
to go through, less arguments to pass), and, given an mp_print_t*
structure, one can call mp_print_str for efficiency instead of
mp_printf("%s", ...). Code size is also reduced by around 200 bytes on
Thumb2 archs.
Fixes msvc linker warnings about mismatching sizes between the mp_obj_fdfile_t
struct defined in file.c and the mp_uint_t declarations found in modsys.c and modbuiltins.c
Most of printing infrastructure now uses streams, but mp_obj_print() used
libc's printf(), which led to weird buffering issues in output. So, switch
mp_obj_print() to streams too, even though it may make sense to move it to
a separate file, as it is purely a debugging function now.
The function is modeled after traceback.print_exception(), but unbloated,
and put into existing module to save overhead on adding another module.
Compliant traceback.print_exception() is intended to be implemented in
micropython-lib in terms of sys.print_exception().
This change required refactoring mp_obj_print_exception() to take pfenv_t
interface arguments.
Addresses #751.
mp_obj_int_get_truncated is used as a "fast path" int accessor that
doesn't check for overflow and returns the int truncated to the machine
word size, ie mp_int_t.
Use mp_obj_int_get_truncated to fix struct.pack when packing maximum word
sized values.
Addresses issues #779 and #998.
Going from MICROPY_ERROR_REPORTING_NORMAL to
MICROPY_ERROR_REPORTING_TERSE now saves 2020 bytes ROM for ARM Thumb2,
and 2200 bytes ROM for 32-bit x86.
This is about a 2.5% code size reduction for bare-arm.
Because (for Thumb) a function pointer has the LSB set, pointers to
dynamic functions in RAM (eg native, viper or asm functions) were not
being traced by the GC. This patch is a comprehensive fix for this.
Addresses issue #820.
reversed function now implemented, and works for tuple, list, str, bytes
and user objects with __len__ and __getitem__.
Renamed mp_builtin_len to mp_obj_len to make it publically available (eg
for reversed).
This happens for example for zero-size arrays. As .get_buffer() method now
has explicit return value, it's enough to distinguish success vs failure
of getting buffer.
Blanket wide to all .c and .h files. Some files originating from ST are
difficult to deal with (license wise) so it was left out of those.
Also merged modpyb.h, modos.h, modstm.h and modtime.h in stmhal/.
When querying an object that supports the buffer protocol, that object
must now return a typecode (as per binary.[ch]). This does not have to
be honoured by the caller, but can be useful for determining element
size.
It has (again) a fast path for ints, and a simplified "slow" path for
everything else.
Also simplify the way str indexing is done (now matches tuple and list).
This adds support for almost everything (the comma isn't currently
supported).
The "unspecified" type with floats also doesn't behave exactly like
python.
Tested under unix with float and double
Spot tested on stmhal
One of the reason for separate "message" (besides still unfulfilled desire to
optimize memory usage) was apparent special handling of exception with
messages by CPython. Well, the message is still just an exception argument,
it just printed specially. Implement that with PRINT_EXC printing format.
Pretty much everyone needs to include map.h, since it's such an integral
part of the Micro Python object implementation. Thus, the definitions
are now in obj.h instead. map.h is removed.
Mostly just a global search and replace. Except rt_is_true which
becomes mp_obj_is_true.
Still would like to tidy up some of the names, but this will do for now.
mp_module_obj_t can now be put in ROM.
Configuration of float type is now similar to longint: can now choose
none, float or double as the implementation.
math module has basic math functions. For STM port, these are not yet
implemented (they are just stub functions).
Each built-in exception is now a type, with base type BaseException.
C exceptions are created by passing a pointer to the exception type to
make an instance of. When raising an exception from the VM, an
instance is created automatically if an exception type is raised (as
opposed to an exception instance).
Exception matching (RT_BINARY_OP_EXCEPTION_MATCH) is now proper.
Handling of parse error changed to match new exceptions.
mp_const_type renamed to mp_type_type for consistency.
Ultimately all static strings should be qstr. This entry in the type
structure is only used for printing error messages (to tell the type of
the bad argument), and printing objects that don't supply a .print method.
Unlike CPython socket, microsocket object already implements stream protocol
(read/write methods), so makefile() just returns object itself. TODO: this
doesn't take care of arguments CPython's makefile() may accept.
__bool__() and __len__() are just the same as __neg__() or __invert__(),
and require efficient dispatching implementation (not requiring search/lookup).
type->unary_op() is just the right choice for this short of adding
standalone virtual method(s) to already big mp_obj_type_t structure.
mp_obj_int_get() can be used when just full resolution of C machine_int_t
is required (returns truncated value of long int). mp_obj_int_get_checked()
will throw exception if Python int value not representable in machine_int_t.
Change state layout in VM so the stack starts at state[0] and grows
upwards. Locals are at the top end of the state and number downwards.
This cleans up a lot of the interface connecting the VM to C: now all
functions that take an array of Micro Python objects are in order (ie no
longer in reverse).
Also clean up C API with keyword arguments (call_n and call_n_kw
replaced with single call method that takes keyword arguments). And now
make_new takes keyword arguments.
emitnative.c has not yet been changed to comply with the new order of
stack layout.
Qstr's are now split into a linked-list of qstr pools. This has 2
benefits: the first pool can be in ROM (huge benefit, since we no longer
use RAM for the core qstrs), and subsequent pools use m_new for the next
pool instead of m_renew (thus avoiding a huge single table for all the
qstrs).
Still would be better to use a hash table, but this scheme takes us part
of the way (eventually convert the pools to hash tables).
Also fixed bug with import.
Also improved the way the module code is referenced (not magic number 1
anymore).
A big change. Micro Python objects are allocated as individual structs
with the first element being a pointer to the type information (which
is itself an object). This scheme follows CPython. Much more flexible,
not necessarily slower, uses same heap memory, and can allocate objects
statically.
Also change name prefix, from py_ to mp_ (mp for Micro Python).
